The LES Partnership teamed up with the Royal Town Planning Institute to co-host a half-day conference on Low Emission Strategies in Manchester on 4th November 2009. Representatives from eight North West based Councils, planning consultants and climate change specialists came together to discuss the potential for low emission strategies in their area.
Steve Merryfield from the LES Partnership looked at the possibilities for using Section 106 agreements to obtain funding for air quality monitoring and put in place other LES measures. Andrew Whittles from Cenex gave delegates an overview of low emission vehicle and associated technologies, and encouraged people to get involved in the work of the LES Partnership. Tanya Murat from Greenwich Council looked at some examples of policies that can allow Councils to introduce Low Emission Strategies.
Discussion centred on the potential for future activities in the North West and the influence of transport planning within an emerging Local Development Framework. Paul Cartmell made a useful contribution from the platform about his experience at Wigan Council.
Further half-day conferences will be held in partnership with the RTPI. The next is expected to be early next year in Edinburgh.
