Air Quality Summit

On 30th November 2009, the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Transport co-hosted an Air Quality Summit, to provide a forum for Local Authorities to share best practice in improving air quality.

The central theme of the Summit was the importance of partnerships between Local Authorities, Central Government and the community, in working together to achieve cleaner air. The concept of Low Emission Strategies was identified as a key tool available to Local Authorities.

Jim Fitzpatrick, MP and Minister of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: “The LES Partnership has provided a lead in demonstrating that sustainable development and planning can form part of the solution to improving air quality”.

The Minister went on to announce the launch of LES Guidance on the Defra website, which he praised for its inclusion of “real examples of best practice that can make our cities and towns better places to live and work”.

Examples of Low Emission Strategies were then presented by Councillor Maureen O’Mara, from Greenwich, Councillor Shaffaq Mohammed, from Sheffield and Councillor John Tanner from Oxford.
